VMware Workstation is a great product. Running a virtual machine on your workstation is very handy for testing or experimenting (and not messing up your machine!). However, that costs $$. Sun (ok, now Oracle) has Virtual Box. That's a very nice (free) VM. Here's something to try when bored or looking to try out new software (particularly open source)... Download/install VirtualBox. Then head over to www.turnkeylinux.org/. Turnkey Linux has several VM appliances (compatible with VirtualBox or VMWare). The appliances are pre-built Linux VMs with a major app installed like Wordpress, Moodle, Drupal, or plain old LAMP. They build each vm with a nice web interface so even if you aren't comfortable with Linux you can still find your way around. Anyway, it's a nice quick way to try out some opensource server apps.

I have worked with VMware for quite a while, using it to run various Linux Distros, like Backtrack, I've always found it the fastest and with the most options, also it's pretty easy to get free if you look in the right places.
